| The Panthers Roar Into Playoffs By "The G-man" The Far Rockaway Panthers are on the move! The Pee Wee and Junior Pee Wee teams have advanced into the first round of the playoffs. Last week, it was reported that the Pee Wee team was virtually eliminated from playoff contention when they lost to the Ridgedale Brewers. After conferring with league representatives, it was confirmed that the team did make the playoffs, and that the game they lost last week was to determine home field advantage and whether or not they would drop to third place or remain second in the standings. The Junior Pee Wee team took fourth place in the standings, giving them a playoff berth. The Pee Wee coach, John Zabala, and Junior Pee Wee coach, Bill Blakely, are excited about their chances heading into the playoffs. "It was a tough season, but now it gets even tougher. The second season begins now, and if we stay focused, great things are going to happen for these teams," said Zabala. The Pee Wee team had a "bye" last week, but the Junior Pee Wee team faced the Springfield Rifles. The game was filled with tension, as both teams needed the win to make the playoff round. Many parents, fans and curious onlookers attended the game, played at Bayswater State Park, and the cheering of the Far Rockaway Panther Cheerleaders could be heard all the way to The Beach Club. Both teams unleashed a flurry of wicked hits and tackles, and the game was at a fevered pitch. The Panthers were leading 14-6, and the game came down to a fourth and three play, on the fifteen-yard line, for the Springfield Rifles, with less than a minute on the clock. When the ball was snapped, it was handed off to the running back, which quickly cut to the outside. The running back was on the verge of making the first down marker, when Adonai Smith-Bey, number 34, made a crushing hit to stop him short of the first down. Parents, fans, coaches and fellow players leaped for the sky in exhilaration. Smith-Bey was later awarded the game ball and was the game’s MVP. "This is an amazing turnout. It’s good to see so many parents and fans of the team come out to support these kids. The noise level was deafening at this game. My players couldn’t hear the play being called by the quarterback, but it’s all good," chuckled Coach Blakely. "This is a great experience for these kids, and we want to show the entire Rockaway community that great things, positive things, do happen in Far Rockaway."

Volunteers are always welcome. We need Moms and Dads at games to act as game commissioners, handle the down markers, operate the score board, and video tape the game. If you can help, please let us know!!! |
Each year several New Board members, Coaches, and Cheer Coaches are sought... Coaches, Parents, or Fans interested in seeing the Far Rockaway Panthers continue in the Far Rockaway area... Organizing or administrative skills, coaching or (more typically) high school football background, fund-raising, or just plain enthusiasm-- all are needed to help administer and
improve our Panther program. Individuals or parents who would like to be a part of and help Far Rockaway Football, such as football and Cheer Coaches, Board members, or helpful parents or individuals, should call us at: 718-318-4990, or e-mail us at: Panthers@FRPanthers.com with your interest.
Self-respect, Discipline, Pride,
The Far Rockaway Panthers organization has been helping the youth of Far Rockaway become strong,
vital members of the community. They learn discipline, and respect, not only for others, but also for themselves. We have recently added cheerleading as a valuable sport to enhance our league beyond the typical football program we have always offered. We are a non-profit organization, which means, the money we receive comes from the
community which supports us. However, we have some big needs. First of all, a big thanks go out from all of us to www.ABetterRock.com for giving us a page on their website. It's a start and with the proper funding we look to be getting our very own full blown website up and running for the
year 2002. Next we have to get some lights put up in the field we practice and play in so the kids can play safely. As you know, football is played late in the year, and it gets dark early. The lights are going to cost and we look forward to getting help from our local politicians. We also need goal posts, a score board and some
bleachers for our family and guest when they come to see us play. The
third most important thing we need is a concession stand and clubhouse. The concessions are our life-blood, as it funds our basic needs throughout the season as well as provides snacks and water to the kids, their parents, siblings and visiting teams on game days. The concession stand is vital to our survival as
a league, but a clubhouse would help beyond the league level, down to each individual team. Ask any member of the Far Rockaway Panthers why we need a clubhouse, especially for the Friday night potlucks, and they will tell you that without the Friday night potlucks, the teams have to scramble for trophy and team party money, and
hardly ever have the funds for a coach's present. The potluck not only provides the team with some money, it's usually our best meal of the week! (Everyone is welcome) We also need a scoreboard and bleachers for the fans, friends, and family of the players and cheerleaders. So, as you can see, we have been very busy providing our
kids a safe place to play that they can call their own, but there is still so much more to do, and that is where we need your help. Any donation you can give us helps greatly, and be it monetary or goods, we will send you the most sincere thank you we can. Banner ads will be available for $200 each when we get our website up and running. Your banner ad may display your Company's
name, logo and graphics and a link to your Company's web site or business. All sponsors are listed on the Sponsors page with a link to the sponsor's Website. This is, after all, a "football town", so
Far Rockaway Panthers P.O. Box 123 Far Rockaway, NY 11691
Dear Sir or Madam:
I am writing you on behalf of the Far Rockaway Panthers. We are a non-profit organization where academics and athletics go hand-in-hand. At every level, Far Rockaway Panthers seeks to develop well-rounded young men and women who learn not only the fundamentals of football and cheerleading, but also the importance of
education, in an atmosphere conducive to developing sound mind, body and character- and having a good time along the way. Our League is comprised of over 500 kids involved in football, baseball, and cheerleading not counting the endless number of parents and volunteers which may be customers or employees of your company. As you are aware, the Far Rockaway area is facing unprecedented growth but unfortunately, there are very few areas for the
many athletic leagues in the area to practice and play their games. We are at a crossroads and desperately need to secure land for our kids to practice in a safe environment. We are seeking your financial support to help us keep our registration costs to a minimum, so no kids are left out based on financial considerations. In addition, we need your financial support to help us secure a practice field that will provide long-term use and safety for our kids. You will find an enclosed card so you can identify your level of support, as well as a return envelope. As a financial sponsor, your company logo will be included on our sponsorship banner at all games and on our league website. A sponsor list will be provided to all parents and they will be encouraged
to support our sponsors. Your contributions are tax deductible. I thank you in advance for your support of the Far Rockaway Panthers Pee Wee Football League and our objectives to inspire youth, regardless of race, creed or national origin, to practice the ideals of sportsmanship, scholarship, and physical fitness. If you have any questions regarding our league or your form of contribution, please do not hesitate to call me at
Sincerely,
