We should identify and prioritize the problems, then address each issue singularly
to eventually develop a complete, comprehensive waterfront plan.

A Better Public Rockaway Inc., established in 2001, is a not for profit, public interest group with a mission: to protect public access to our waters, to preserve historical uses, rights of way, waterfront views and to help foster the development of the Rockaway Peninsula waterfront and shore line areas in ways that maximize public access. ...

A Better Public Rockaway has started using the internet to connect the community together. We are working on a new and ideal forum for discussing all topics concerning Rockaways waterfront and public access issues.

The Rockaway Peninsula is, by anyone's account, a very special place. Thrusting out into the vast waters of the Atlantic ocean, the peninsula boasts miles of pristine shoreline, beautiful sun rise and sets, clear waters, our bays and inlets and a vibrant community of year-round and summer residents. The people of the Rockaways-not to mention the thousands of visitors who come each year-are convinced that this is a place whose unique features and character are worth preserving for all generations to come.

However, Rockaway is at a turning point. Many people are surprised to learn that there is very little public land on the peninsula. Some of the shoreline is now fenced with no public access. For no reasons other then to keep the public out! People Fences. This has raised concerns about the continued availability of public access to the most spectacular parts of the Rockaways. And we foresee many more fences to come as developers come in to buy what's left of the Peninsula.

A Better Public Rockaway is an organization for everyone who cares about the future of the Rockaway Peninsula. The organizers of A Better Rockaway believe that it is important for the entire community to have more information about what is happening. (OPEN MEETINGS) We see these fences being placed on our beaches as the beginning of a process of discussion and our main mission is to secure the future of public access in the Rockaways.

A Better Rockaways goal is to work with Rockaway residents, our government at all levels, landowners on the peninsula and the community at large to secure a permanent increase in the amount of public land, beach access and the taking down of these People Fences in the Rockaways.

A Better Rockaway is committed to doing this in a non-confrontational, cooperative manner. We recognize that one of the benefits of increased public ownership is that it will provide more stable and predictable operating conditions for the people of the Rockaways and the tourism industry.

What Does Public Access Mean to You?

Did you know that there is very little public land and beach access in the eastern and western end of our Peninsula?

We'd like to hear from you about how you enjoy this gift of access to one of the most beautiful areas of the Rockaways. Is there an area you use to visit that is now fenced of to the public? A beach? Shoreline that is a favorite for you? Are there areas in the Rockaways that are now encircled by company or private land and could be completely closed to the public? A particularly beautiful stretch of shoreline that you like to walk along?

As we work towards ensuring that all of us and our children can enjoy this beautiful Peninsula, it's important that we understand the laws and our rights to walk along and enjoy our beaches. Visit our other pages on this website for more on A Better Public Rockaway.
